Nigeria Drops Charges Against Binance Executive
According to sources, a court in Nigeria has dismissed all charges against Tigran Gambaryan, a former IRS investigator and current head of financial crime compliance at Binance, a major cryptocurrency exchange.
Gambaryan, who has been detained in Nigeria since February, was facing charges of money laundering and tax evasion.
The surprise announcement of the dismissal came during his ongoing trial. The court cited Gambaryan’s need for medical treatment outside of the country as the reason for dropping the charges.
It is not confirmed if he has left Nigeria yet, and his family is not currently commenting on the matter.
However, Nigerian officials have stated that they will continue to pursue a tax evasion case against Binance itself.
The government has revealed that Gambaryan will be released due to deteriorating health conditions, after being held in the Kuju prison outside of Abuja and suffering from illnesses such as malaria and a herniated disc. His lawyers had been advocating for his medical treatment for several months.
