Landfill in UK with $750M in Bitcoin Set to Close

The landfill located in Newport, Wales, where James Howells mistakenly disposed of a hard drive containing 7,500 bitcoins (currently valued at around $750 million or £620 million), has a planned closure date of 2025-26.

Despite Howells’ attempts to sue the council for access to the site or compensation, he was unsuccessful.

As the council prepares to cap and close the landfill, which has been operational since the early 2000s, they are anticipating a loss of revenue.

However, a portion of the land will be repurposed for a solar farm to power the council’s increasing number of electric bin lorries as they move away from diesel vehicles.
