Roger Ver Charged with Tax Fraud
The United States Department of Justice has announced charges against Roger Ver, an early investor in Bitcoin who is also known as ‘Bitcoin Jesus.’
On April 30, it was revealed that Ver had been arrested in Spain based on criminal charges in the US, including mail fraud and tax evasion.
The Justice Department accused Ver of defrauding the IRS out of approximately $48 million by failing to report capital gains from the sale of Bitcoin and other assets.
The indictment, which was filed on February 15 and unsealed on April 29, alleged that Ver sold 70,000 BTC for $240 million in June 2017, before the famous bull run.
Ver is expected to be extradited from Spain to the US for trial. There were mixed reactions on social media to Ver’s arrest, with some, like former Kraken growth lead Dan Held, believing he deserved it for almost destroying Bitcoin.
