Argentina is Reportedly Investigating Crypto Project Worldcoin
Argentina has announced the initiation of an investigation by a government information agency into the Worldcoin Foundation, a cryptocurrency project focused on identity co-created by Sam Altman.
According to a government statement, the Public Information Access Agency intends to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the methods and procedures employed in gathering, storing, and utilizing personal data. The agency aims to take appropriate actions to rectify any identified issues.
In various locations across Buenos Aires and other provinces, individuals underwent facial and ocular scans in exchange for compensation, sparking the need to bolster the existing legal framework concerning Personal Data Protection. The statement emphasized that individuals have the right to transparent and easily accessible information regarding the collection, usage, and purpose of their provided data, particularly sensitive data like biometrics.
Worldcoin, on the other hand, reported a significant surge in signups earlier this week, with verifications increasing by over 100% in the week subsequent to their public launch.
However, after enrolling more than 250,000 individuals in Kenya, the project encountered a setback when the country halted its operations due to operational concerns.
