Mining Firm Marathon Digital Mines a Broken BTC Block
On September 27, miner Marathon Digital inadvertently mined an invalid block at height #809,478 on the Bitcoin mainnet due to a transaction ordering issue.
As a result, the block was rejected by other network participants since they were attempting to use funds from an unprocessed transaction.
The correct block was successfully mined by the Foundry USA pool at the same height.
Representatives from Marathon acknowledged the mistake, stating that it was an “unexpected” error and was not an attempt to modify Bitcoin Core.
They promptly resolved the issue once it was brought to their attention.
This incident serves as a testament to the strong security of the network, which effectively rejected and resolved the anomaly.
Casa CTO Jameson Lopp humorously pointed out that Bitcoin’s robust verification system prevents double-spending attempts, making it an impregnable fortress.
