Mexican Presidential Candidate Gives Support to BTC Payments
Mexican Senator Indira Kempiz of Nuevo Leon has recently announced her plans to include Bitcoin as a central component of her political platform in connection to her candidacy for the presidency of the country.
Kempiz drew attention in 2022 when she proposed a bill to create a central bank digital currency (CBDC).
The initial version of the bill did not mention cryptocurrencies and only designated the Banco de México as the sole issuer of the digital peso.
However, after facing criticism from the crypto community, Kempiz added Bitcoin to the bill, stating that it was necessary for a pragmatic approach and timely development of the legal framework.
Currently, there has been no official response from the central bank regarding the CBDC bill, and reactions from other lawmakers are divided.
Senator Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador stated that Mexico will not accept Bitcoin as legal tender, following El Salvador’s recent decision to legalize it.
