Colombia’s Regulator Accuses Worldcoin of Violating Data Policies

The Superintendence of Industry and Commerce (SIC) in Colombia has accused Worldcoin and its parent company, Tools for Humanity, of violating the personal data protection laws, according to a statement released on Tuesday.

The SIC has initiated an investigation against Worldcoin without a formal accusation, with the goal of determining whether the company has infringed on the country’s data protection regulations.

According to the SIC, Worldcoin, a decentralized identity project founded by Sam Altman of OpenAI, has been collecting sensitive personal data through its Orb device in 25 locations across Colombia, including major cities such as Bogota, Medellin, Cartagena, and Barranquilla.

If Worldcoin is found guilty, the SIC has the authority to impose economic sanctions such as temporary closure for six months or permanent closure of the company’s operations.
